Practicum Site and Supervisor: Joseph Wong & Associates Counselling.
I am currently a Master’s level MA in counselling psychology, I’m a practicum student who is qualified to practice under the clinical supervision of an approved practicum supervisor. I hold an undergraduate degree in psychology and I have the opportunity and to work and support many individuals from diverse populations that includes; children, teenagers, adults and families.
My goal as a therapist who is both Black and Muslim and who was born and brought up a few years in Nigeria and much more in Canada, is to help my clients see how their many identities and life experiences interact with one another.
I get that it’s important to combat the stigma associated with mental health in all its forms, not just in Muslim and African groups, but in your own life as well. No matter your ethnic or geographical origin, I aim to provide a welcoming space where you can feel comfortable expressing yourself and working through your relationships and sense of self without fear of reprisal.
I am deeply committed to helping individuals who are grappling with challenges such as: anxiety, low self-esteem, stress, bullying, school, grief, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), immigration, and loneliness. My therapeutic approach is client-centered and draws from a variety of sources, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), emotional focused therapy (EFT), solution-focused therapy (SFT), and others as needed.
I am passionate about mentoring and advocating for the youth and families in my Nigerian community to promote mental health awareness and destigmatize seeking help for psychological concerns. Outside of school, I enjoy playing soccer and am actively involved in a community outreach organization that provides care packages to the homeless.
My life’s work is to support people in finding health, personal development, and spiritual fulfillment in a way that is respectful of their cultural backgrounds and religious practices. As a therapist, I am dedicated to being there for my clients every step of the way as they heal and find who they are via empathy, cultural humility, and honesty.
One of my favourite quotes is “You are the author of your own story”’ This is something I hope to integrate in my approach when working with you. In our work together, one of my goals is to help and find ways for you to choose to make your story, your strength. Yes I am here to support as your therapist but I am also here to help you define your own goals to find your own meaning to life. You seeking therapy is you taking one step to living a better lifestyle, although it does not fix your issues overnight, but one at a time we will work together to help you achieving your goals
I look forward to working with you on your mental health journey.
